Unst is the most northerly of the Shetland Islands. In fact it is the northernmost of the inhabited British Isles, and is the third largest island in Shetland after the Mainland and Yell.

It has an area of 46 square miles, with a population of approx 600 people.

We look forward to hearing your voice!

Unst Writers Group (UWG) was founded in 1993 when a collection of kindred spirits met to enjoy their love of writing during a harsh Shetland winter. In the early years, three anthologies of poetry and prose were published by the group: ‘Hamar Nights’, ‘More Hamar Nights’ and ‘One for Unst’. The format of UWG has varied through the years.

Most recently, the group has focussed on two main activities: providing assistance towards publication of anthologies by Unst poets, and providing talks.

During Unst Fest one year the Writer’s Group organised a series of short talks on Unst writers. Writers, including Writers in Residence, have also periodically given public talks at Nordalea care centre, supported by UWG. The group was responsible for the production of, ‘The Harp of Twilight’, a glossy, colour poetry anthology in hardback, by the late Jack Renwick from Unst. They also provided financial support towards publication of ‘A Kishie of Monkeys’, by McKenzie Cash, a former member of the group.

Summer of 2014 has seen a further evolution of the group. New members have brought fresh and exciting ideas. This site has been established by Unst Writers Group to provide a friendly and safe forum for sharing your writing as well as posting details of events and competitions.
